Caroline's One Million steps for Lesley and MNDA

Story

My lovely friend Lesley has got Motor Neurone Disease. It's called ALS in the US. It's what took Stephen Hawking, David Niven, Don Revie and blues man Lead Belly. Now it's taking Lesley but she's not going without a fight. There's no cure for this vile disease but scientists are constantly working to find one. There's only one drug approved for treatment but it's effect only adds a few months to life expectancy.

MND causes loss of mobilty, speech and finally breathing function. I'll leave it to your imagination what that must be like when the brain is still good.

It can be quick, it can be slow and it can be anywhere in between. People with MND need support and that's where the Motor Neurone Disease Association step in. They have been a great help to Lesley and her family.

This help needs to be paid for and just as important is the MNDA's work towards finding treatments and a cure.

I'm aiming to raise £1000 for MNDA by walking/running 1000000 steps between 1st July and 30th September. UPDATE I've started well so I secretly want to do it in around 75 days but don't tell anyone.

All the sponsorship money will go to Lesley's Fightback against MND fund - she is aiming for £20000. The money all goes to MNDA for them to use as they need to but we are raising it in Lesley's name!

Thank you all so much for your kindness. I know there are million good causes to give to so I do appreciate you choosing to support this one. We have to find a cure for this horrible disease.

As you can see we've smashed our target. Hopefully when I collect the last of the pledged sponsorship we might just sneak past the £2000 mark! One million steps in 67 days is done. Next year I am taking on the epic Coast to Coast walk with my friend Kate Lewis. I reckon we'll be doing around half a million steps on twk weeks so it'll be tough and we will have to prepare well. Thank you once again for your support. We need to make some desperately needed progress towards finding a cure for this horrible disease.

I marched past 1000000 steps on September 5th which was Day 67. An average of 15004 steps per day. I decided to try to keep going until the end of the month but circumstances have conspired against me and although I still managed 100000+ steps last week, I've had a few rubbish days. On Friday at 7pm I will be walking up the Big One Rollercoaster in Blackpool - 213 feet high. My jump off the Transporter Bridge last year was a mere 165 feet but fear not, I won't be jumping off the rollercoaster! No chance. Thank you for your support.

At the end of Day 53 I've done around 820000 steps. Next month I'm climbing the Big One rollercoaster in Blackpool. I'd hoped to take my millionth step on there but I reckon I'll be well past it by then. I'm encouraged and inspired by Lesley who now struggles with the day to day things we take for granted. I had a mammoth stepping day yesterday as it was Egton Show. I won a few little prizes so I've kept the rosettes and donated the money to our fund. Thank you for all your support and donations. We have to find a cure.

42 days in and I'm flagging a bit. I love the long walks on my days off but work days can feel harder even though I may do less steps! Lots of stairs at work. Lots. I can't explain how much seeing Lesley struggle motivates me. This bloody awful disease needs grinding into the dirt. Thank you all. Your support means so much.

Our Walk to D'Feet was a great success raising over £500 for the cause. It also saw my highest ever steps in one day - a whopping 30065. My legs and feet reminded me of that the day after. I'm still averaging more than 15000 a day but I need to keep up the effort as I want to keep it up there. Your donations truly encourage me and they also give Lesley a lift. Although she makes a huge effort to be positive, understandably, there are days when she needs a bit of help so thank you all.

Ups and downs in week 2. My feet are officially hurting now and I keep dropping things on them which hasn't helped. But I'm still well ahead of target and I aim to keep ahead. Thanks for your support.

This is quite addictive. I have an official daily target of 10870 (and a secret one of a bit more) and I find myself itching to get out and do those steps. What spurs me on is walking the paths that I've walked with Lesley only a couple of years ago with the knowledge that today she can barely walk six steps and needs a walking aid to do that. MND is brutal. We must find a cure. Thanks for your support.

Here we go. Day one and a nice walk to the village and back before work. My legs are killing after lots of walking and running over the weekend.

Just a week to go until I start my challenge. My right achilles has been niggling all week but I think it is just attention seeking so I'm ignoring it. Thanks to everyone who has already donated. It really does mean a lot to me and to Lesley.
